Theology Network Groups
Introductory Meeting Outline
- Helping you know God better, love Jesus more, and join the revolution! View all resources by Theology Network
Aim: everyone to get to know each other a bit better, set the agenda in terms of honesty about engaging with questions raised by courses, and in reaching out to non-Christian course mates.
Resources: you'll need to print out enough copies of the UCCF Doctrinal Basis for everyone. You can find it here. You might find this article by Mike Reeves helpful to read beforehand. A large (A2) sheet of paper for the brainstorm - and marker pens.
Brief intro to Theology Network
Along the lines of: "Theology Network is about a revolution – the revolution of doing theology that transforms our minds to see the world as God sees it, and transforms our lives to be like Christ as we see him more clearly. We long to for theology and religious studies students to be confidently growing in their knowledge of God and their love for Christ, sharing this wonderful gospel with their friends, and preparing for a lifetime of Christ-exalting ministry." For more, see this article.
Get to know each other
Everyone introduce themselves (ice breaker?! Favourite ice-cream and why it describes them?)
Discussion: UCCF Doctrinal Basis
Briefly introduce the DB along the lines of “this is a breakdown of the essential truths of Christianity in the tradition of the Apostles’ Creed; in UCCF we invite all Christians to unite around the DB, leaving aside all disagreements about secondary issues, in order to bring us together for the mission of giving every student the opportunity to hear and respond to the gospel of Jesus Christ.”
Give everyone a copy of the DB on a handout and read through it all together.
Ask them to discuss with their neighbour - what's their reaction to it, positive and negative?
Brainstorm on big sheet of paper
Think of as many doubts or questions about the Christian faith you can that might be raised by your courses or friends - e.g. Issues with the DB? Is the OT historically reliable? Are Allah and God the Father the same God? Is evangelism to non-Christian theology students arrogant? Did Jesus claim to be God? Did Paul alter Jesus' gospel?
Rank them in order of 3 biggest issues for Christians, and 3 biggest issues for non-Christians. Discuss this in 2s first – then maybe take a vote!
Discuss the one biggest issue for Christians and the one biggest issue for non-Christians. Why are they issues? What problems do they raise? What Christian answers do people know of? Resources to help?
Each share about one thing you'd like prayer for, and one or two friends you are praying for. Do this in 2s or 3s. Spend some time praying through these things.
